Spring Cleaning – Mind Body & Soul

With the clocks springing forward this weekend what better time to discuss some spring cleaning?! Typically, spring cleaning entails going through your old clothes, cleaning the grime from behind the refrigerator, and replacing your holiday wreath with some fresh flowers. Remember those resolutions we all set a couple months back? Let’s revisit those (:

Remember when we all said we would eat healthy, be active, and exercise every single day of 2016?! Well . . . We don’t need to go quite that far. However, I do think it is a good idea to go back to those goals and touch on them at this time. I think spring cleaning is about SO much more than just junking your old winter things and organizing your vanity. Spring is a rebirth. How beautiful to be given this time to grow and blossom. Grow your mind, body, and soul. Revisit those goals of personal growth.

With this rebirth of the seasons I am focusing on bettering myself and being aware and appreciative of my surroundings. I strive to cleanse my body. I have started doing this by eating better. It’s amazing the difference your body feels when you eat wholesome and healthy foods. I am also exercising more! I have been so terrible and getting active and staying fit over the past couple of years. But, that’s changed! Over thre past month I have been working out more and more. I enjoy going to the gym and I love taking yoga classes. I’ve even been considering taking a course the become a certifified yoga instructor I love it so much. Exercising is one of those things that once you get in the swing of things you fall in love with it and want to keep going. Get motivitsted and get going!

This ties into my next “cleansing” of this spring. My mind. Exercising really helps clear my mind and keep me focused on just what I’m doing in that moment. Along with that I have been taking every opportunity I have to go on walks. With the temperatures getting up there being outside has been amazing recently! I took my dog for a long walk along the ocean and it couldn’t have been a more perfect afternoon. It allowed me to get outside, explore a place I had never been, and laugh endlessly while my white dog rolled in the muddy trail along the beach.

This spring I challenge you to revisit your goals for the year, get outside, and cleanse your mind, body, and soul. Don’t forget to clean your house thought, because that is a great place to start! Happy spring! Don’t let the clocks springing forward Sunday morning set you back! (:

Spring Skincare Routine

March is here and spring is on its way! Let’s kick off this month with a skincare routine. After the cold and dry winter months it’s easy to find your skin feeling dull and flaky. As an esthetician I have lots of favorite products, tips, and tricks to make your skin better than it’s ever been. Let’s brighten it up to get you glowing for spring break and these warmer days!

IMG_7429I wash my face with the Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser. I absolutely love this because it’s not just a cleanser, but also a gentle exfoliant. This is great to use 2-3 times a week. It sloughs off any dead skin leaving my face feeling bright and soft.

IMG_7433Then, tone tone tone. This is a step which is often missed in many peoples skincare routines. It is so important to add in those vital nutrients that you just washed of your face as well as balance your skin. I alternate between the Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence and the Mario Bodescu Facial Spray. These are both great toners for my combination skin because they hydrate me while also controlling the oily spots on my face.

IMG_7437Next, facemasks are an essential for this time of year. After winter your skin is usually parched and needing a boost of hydration and brightness. Sheet masks are great for just that! My favorites always come from Asian beauty stores. Their skincare technology is very advanced and they truly have it all down to a science. Some of my favorite sheet masks are Kelp, Chia, and even Snail. These are all very hydrating and healing ingredients.

IMG_7438If I am breaking out, rather than putting a clay mask all over my face and going for the stereotypical full green face and cucumbers on your eyes I just dab the face mask onto my breakouts. This is better for skin because it doesn’t try out your whole face. Instead, it just dries out the problem areas.

IMG_7439Eye creams are VERY important. Although I am just 19 I use an eye cream after every time I wash my face. Many people (like me before I went to school to be an esthetician) assume eye cream is meant for your mom whose poor under eyes are exhausted from dealing with all of your childish shenanigans. WRONG. Well, kind of. Using an eye cream as part of your daily skincare routine should start by the age of 20. Believe it or not, but your collagen and elastin already begin to start breaking down and growing less rapidly in your 20s. Your eyes are one of the first parts of your body which shows visible aging. So, instead of trying to take on the issue once it’s already there, use eye cream early on as a preventative measure. My current favorite is this collagen eye cream which incorporates snail solution, which as I mentioned is very healing and hydrating. Be sure to dab this on under and around your eyes lightly with your ring finger since this is a very delicate area. Eye creams can get pricey, but remember that a little goes a long way!

IMG_7442Lastly, moisturize! I know for people who are acne prone, or have oily skin putting on moisturizer can be VERY intimidating. You just washed all of that oil and grime off your skin so why would you clog it and grease your face up again, right? Wrong. Moisturizing is important for all skin types. It’s just a matter of finding a moisturizer that is right for you! I have been using the Tata Harper Repairative Moisturizer and find that it works well with my skin. It is very hydrating but super light at the same time which is perfect since I do have combination skin.

Skincare can be a lot of trial and error and seeing what works for you. Don’t be intimidated! Your skin is a wise place to invest your time and money, because you have it forever! Be smart. Use good products and always wear SPF! Happy Spring! (:

Spring Layers

Has this not been the weirdest winter ever?! Up here in Maine we have had record breaking high temperatures, but then record breaking lows the very next day!! Today, it’s raining and 52 degrees which is so odd for February. This would typically be snow… but don’t worry in a week the forecast is predicting frozen rain and more snow. This makes getting dressed rather weird right now. Do I wear shorts? Do I wear a sweater? Do I need rain boots or snow boots or none of the above?!? I’ve been itching to start wearing more pastels again and shed my crazy winter attire that consists of layers upon layers topped with a down coat and fleece lined knit hat. Plus, I love my boots by they can get clunky and as of right now I am SO over them. Here’s the outfit I threw together on a mildly chilly day while channeling my inner spring & trying to keep warm.

Ever since I’ve been craving warmer weather and outfits that match, I’ve been digging a more casual look. I never usually go for slip-ons but recently I have been OBSESSED! I have on these heathered blue slip-ons from a local shoe store. I cuffed my dark washed jeans at the bottom because this is my favorite way to style any slip-on. I also didn’t mind the chilly air kissing my ankles for the first time on many months.IMG_7247 IMG_7156

Dark washed jeans are some of my favorite because they can easily be dressed up or down. This pair in particular are from American Eagle along with the dusty blush top I’m wearing. I wanted to go with a pop of color to get out of the winter blues, but didn’t want to go too bright… It is still only February after all!

Then, to layer overtop and keep me warm I went with this amazingly comfy grey cardigan from Banana Republic. I have been living in this recently since it’s so cozy and warm. This sweater looks perfect over any outfit.

I can’t wait until the sun really starts to shine so I can start styling some even brighter and more exciting outfits and makeup to match!!

Cozy Winter Night

Mid February is still full blown winter up here in Maine. Luckily, it’s been a pretty mild winter – only a couple big snow storms so far… But it’s not over yet! We still have a month or so more of this bitter cold and snow days. What better way to spend a cold Saturday or a snowy day off of work & school than in your pajamas with cozy treats?!

I started with a yummy Nutella crockpot hot chocolate. This is so simple and yummy. The aroma fills your kitchen adding to the cozy vibe of winter. I used my mini crockpot to make the perfect size for a mug full. Here’s what I used:

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of Nutella
  • 1 tablespoon of Cocoa Powder
  • 1 tablespoon of sugarIMG_7086 IMG_7108 IMG_7097
Let that cook for about 2 hours on low, or until heated through, and pop in an ADORABLE mug such as mine from E & H Creates. They sell the cutest mugs and stationary on their Etsy shop. You can also check out their Instagram HERE (:
While that’s heating I like to throw on a face mask. My favorite are sheet masks from Asian (specifically Korean ones!!) beauty stores. These are perfect for a cozy pamper day at home. Yes, I did indeed make my entire family put on animal themed face masks. I don’t think they totally hated it though :pIMG_6377
Right before my hot coco is done I like to whip up a quick treat to enjoy while I get cozy on the couch and catch up on Netflix and YouTube {here’s my channel if you wanna check it out (: } To stick with my homemade chocolate treats theme I made lava cake. I have been absolutely obsessed with lava cake recently. The recipe I used I found on Buzzfeed and is seriously so simple it blows my mind. This recipe makes the perfect amount for two to share while snuggled up on a cozy winter night. I shared with my sister who is also a lava cake queen and she said it was the best she’s ever had, so you know it’s amazing. Here’s what I used:
  • 1/2 cup semisweet or dark baking chocolate (I used a combo)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temperature (plus a bit extra to grease your baking ramekins)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (plus a bit extra to dust over greased ramekins)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (not required but I always add it)IMG_7033 IMG_7039IMG_7034 IMG_7078
To see the full baking directions check out the BuzzFeed post HERE.
No cozy winter night at home is complete without a onesie, a comfy blanket, a good show, and good company. Get cozy and enjoy the rest of these winter weeks before spring hits and we break out the sandals and pastels! (:

Sweet Treats for Valentines Day

Happy February!! I had all the intentions of making some more posts to start the month off. However, recovering from my wisdom tooth surgery has been a little rougher than I anticipated :/ If you wanna see a funny video of me waking up from my surgery you can check that out HERE. ANYWAYS back to this yummy post. With Valentines Day just around the corner I wanted to show you guys some of my favorite treats for loved ones, or yourself because I know I’ve been eating like all of these :p

First I’m making Cheesecake Red Velvet Brownies. Here’s what you’ll need:IMG_7001

  • Brownie Mix
  • Ingredients required to make the brownie mix
  • 1 brick of cream cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring (optional)

Start by making your brownie mix per the directions on the box. You could of course make homemade brownies but I decided to simplify this recipe by using boxed. I chose to spruce mine up and make them red velvet brownies so I added red food coloring. Once the brownie mix is made, set it aside. In a separate bowl cream together cream cheese, sugar, egg, and vanilla. Once this is the same consistency as the brownie batter with no lumps set aside. Heat the oven per the directions on the brownie box. Grab a baking dish and grease it. Pour half of the brownie batter into the dish and spread. Next, drop dollops of cheesecake mixture on top of the brownie batter. Using a skewer, knife, or fork begin to swirl the two in the pan. Be sure not to over swirl to avoid mixing the batters completely. Repeat this step with the remaining batters. Bake the cheesecake brownie per the instructions on the box. I baked mine in a 9×13 glass dish for about 36 minutes at 350 degrees. Let them cool and eat up!!IMG_7008 IMG_7011IMG_7007

IMG_7013Next I went with a sweet treat that is perfect to bring to your babe for a yummy breakfast in bed. These are SO easy. All you do is buy premade cinnamon rolls. Next, take two rolls for each heart and unravel it so it creates somewhat of a teardrop shape (half of a heart). Then, press both pieces of the rolls together to create a heart. Bake per the instructions on the package and ice them. What a cute way to start out Valentines Day!

IMG_7004IMG_7015Lastly, it wouldn’t be Valentines Day without chocolate covered strawberries. I saw my local grocery store advertising chocolate covered strawberries for $15.00 for 7!!!! That is insane!! These are so simple to make and MUCH cheaper when you do them yourself. Not to mention you can personalize them and they are made with love. Strawberries were on sale for $2.99 a package, and I bought dark chocolate for less than $3.00. I already had sprinkles and decorations at home making these a much better deal than the advertised 7 for $15.00

Here’s all you’ll need:

  • Strawberries
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Decorations of Choice

Start by washing your strawberries thoroughly. Make sure you pat them dry COMPLETELY afterwards. This is a crucial step in making sure the chocolate sticks on and is smooth. To melt the chocolate you can use a the double boil on the stove technique, or as I did – the microwave. Heat your chocolate chips in 30 second increments stirring between each round of heating. I only needed about half a cup of chocolate chips for a whole container of strawberries. I dipped my strawberries and decorated them with mini chocolate chips, sugar sprinkles, and gold sprinkles. I put mine on a sil-pat to cool so that they came off to be plated really easily. These turned out so cute and so yummy!

I hope everybody has a happy Valentine’s Day!! Thanks for checking in and seeing my favorite sweet treats for this time of year.

Whole Body Wellness

Happy Friday! To wrap up Erica and I’s Fitness Friday series I am going to be talking about whole body wellness. Be sure to check out Erica’s Blog to see some yummy pre and post workout snacks to fuel your body with goodness while staying fit!

On a fitness journey it can be easy to slip into a state of mind which is focused on the wrong things. It is important to remind yourself that numbers and sizes don’t matter. Whole body wellness matters. This means getting active, exercising, staying fit, eating healthy foods, but also your state of mind. Here are some things I do in order to keep my head clear and be mindful.

Reading is something I didn’t start really enjoying until I started doing it for myself, rather than for a school assignment. I have found reading to be something that refreshes my soul and spirit and allows me to relax. My favorite author is Thich Nhat Hanh and his books are amazing especially in regards to spiritual wellness and mindfulness. I highly recommend all of his books.

Coloring is something I did as a child, but stopped. Recently I’ve been loving adult coloring books full of peaceful scenes and mandalas that let your creativity flow and make you focus just on the task of coloring, not all of life’s worries. Not only are adult coloring books super trendy right now, but they are also scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety. Definitely a win for whole body wellness!

Exercise. This is something many people just see as a physical benefit. Although exercising is very important for you physical wellness, it is also crucial in your mental health as well. So get moving!

Take time to listen to the ocean and watch the sun set. With the hustle and bustle of life it can be difficult to take time to be mindful and enjoy the simple things the world has to offer. One of the most therapeutic things for me is to just be at the ocean. Hearing the waves and watching the natural beauty of the ocean always relaxes me and brings me joy. The only thing that can make the ocean any better is watching a sunset over the beach. There are no words for a beautiful sunset over the ocean in Maine. I am so lucky to live in such a beautiful state!

Lastly, put your phone down and go for a walk in the woods! (Preferably not sketchy woods haha) it is so amazing to be out in nature without the distractions of technology. It isn’t necessary to hike a huge mountain to get in touch with nature. Just get outside and walk. This is good exercise and also great for clearing your head, relaxing, and enjoying the beauty of this world.

Different things work for everybody, but these are some of my favorites. It’s important to find what works for you and to remember during your fitness journey to take time to take care of your whole body! Be sure to see what goodies Erica is cooking up! Subscribe, share, and check out all of our social media links to stay up to date! I can’t believe this is the last post of January! See you all next month (;

Fitness Style | Fitness Friday

Happy Friday!! (: you made it to the weekend! Let’s celebrate by talking Fitness Style with my friend Erica! One of my biggest motivators to workout is to have new workout clothes that are super comfy and make me feel good and confident. Here are my two go-to outfits recently.

I have been absolutely loving this sweatpants / sports bra combo. I love really sweating when I workout which is why I like wearing sweatpants when I’m exercising, but I love being in a sorts bra because it doesn’t feel constricting and helps keep me cool. Here, I paired my black Calvin Klein sports bra with a pair of color blocked sweatpants from Forever 21. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my LuluLemon workout clothes as you’ll see in my next outfit, but it’s definitely not necessary to spend an arm and a leg on workout clothes! Some of my favorite places to get inexpensive workout clothes have been Forever21 and Old Navy. The quality is really good especially considering the price!

When I’d rather do a more relaxing workout like yoga I prefer to wear more fitted exercise clothes. I love mixing and matching leggings with workout tops whether they are crazy patterned or simple! This top and bottom combo is from LuluLemon and it’s been one of my faves for yoga recently!

Most importantly, wear what is comfortable to you and what makes you feel confident! When you aren’t concerned about adjusting your bra straps or hiking up your pants you will be able to stay focused on your workout. Not to mention, you will feel amazing after you exercise AND wearing clothes that compliment your body! Stay healthy and stay moving! See you next Friday and be sure to check out Erica’s blog to see her fitness style!! (:

Healthy & Vegan What I Eat in a Day | FitnessFriday

This Fitness Friday is being brought to you a little late because ….  well . . . life happens (: Keep reading to see what I eat in a day when being health conscience! All of these recipes are vegan, and healthy! Although I am not vegan, I believe that is a very healthy lifestyle and eating vegan and plant based has amazing benefits for your body! Also, be sure to keep an eye on my friend, Erica’s, blog to see how she dresses up her veggies!IMG_6295 (800x533)

First, I always start my day with a big glass of water. I don’t drink coffee or tea, but there’s no need because a big, cold glass of water is extremely hydrating and energizing. This has great health benefits including clearing up your skin and removing toxins from your body. On colder mornings I prefer hot water with fresh lemon. This is a great metabolism booster and tastes so yummy! Now, for the food I went with a whole grain English muffin with all natural peanut butter (this can be replaced with any of your favorite nut butters). Be sure to check the ingredients on your peanut butter because they are often full of sugar and preservatives which are no good and definitely not necessary! I topped it with some cut up bananas, strawberries, and a side of kiwi. I am a major “fruit fly” and always fill up on fruit in the mornings. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so be sure you’re fueling your body with whole foods which are nutrient dense!IMG_6312 (800x533) IMG_6310 (800x533)

For lunch, I absolutely love sushi. However, always buying sushi can get pricey and although making it at home is definitely possible, it is quite a time consuming task. Instead, I prefer making a Chirashi Sushi bowl! This is amazing because it’s all of the ingredients of sushi, but in a salad form! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Sushi rice (this can also be replaced with brown rice or quinoa for a healthier alternative)
  • Seasoned rice wine vinegar
  • Cucumber – chopped
  • Matchstick carrots
  • Avocado – cubed
  • Pickled ginger – chopped
  • Furekike (this is flakes of seaweed and taste amazing on top!!)
For a non vegan alternative you can also add any other sushi fillings such at fish or crab. Cook the rice per the instructions on the bag, season with rice wine vinegar, add and combine all of the ingredients. I top mine with soy sauce or coconut aminos for added flavor. This is amazing because you can make a huge serving of it the day or night before and pack it to go for work or school. Not to mention, so much easier than hand rolling sushi!!!IMG_6298 (800x533)
I like to finish off my day with a hardy meal. I like eating something filling so I don’t wake up in the middle of the night starving. Tonight, I chose to make yummy zucchini noodle pasta (sh don’t tell my Italian relatives!). This is so yummy, simple, and filling. All you’ll need is fresh zucchini (preferably organic since you will be eating the peel), pasta sauce, and a spiralizer. Here’s the one I use. First, wash the zucchini thoroughly, then follow the instructions for your specific spiralizer. While I’m spiralizing my “pasta” I begin the heat my sauce in a pan on the stove. You can use any sauce of your choice, but once again be sure to check the ingredients for bad stuff that they sneak in there such as a ton of extra added sugar. Once that begins to simmer I add my spiralized noodles to the pot. I let this cook for about 3-5 minutes, or until the noodles become tender and heated through. Be sure not to boil your zucchini noodles or they will become mushy. Now eat away! You can add any additional topppings similar to the ones you would add to pasta such as nutritional yeast, or for non-vegan options cheese, meatballs, or other veggies!IMG_6302 (800x533)
After dinner I always have to have dessert. I have the WORST sweet tooth and finding healthy alternatives to the typical, ice cream, candy, or cookies is amazing! Two of my favorites include medjool dates. These are a great alternative to sweets because they like natures caramel. They are sweet and chewy and satiate my sweet craving. To dress them up I like to add some peanut butter. If I’m getting really fancy I pit a few and add them to the food processor with just a splash of water. Once the dates are pulverized I remove them and clean the food processor. Next, I pulverize raw almonds until they are the consistency of rough sand (weird analogy for food I know). I then mold the pulverized dates into a small ball and roll them into the sandy shaped almonds. These are seriously to DIE for. I could eat 10 in a sitting, although I wouldn’t recommend it since dates are high in fiber.
I hope you enjoyed seeing what I eat in a day when eating health conscience, plant based, and vegan! For more inspiration be sure to head over to my Pinterest which is linked to the right to see my yummy food boards! Happy Saturday, see you next week for some fitness style!! (:

My Fitness Routine | Fitness Friday

Welcome back to Fitness Friday with me and Erica Aube! This week we will be showing you guys our fitness routines! After getting motivated last week, now its time to get moving.

First and foremost . . . Find out what works for you!! I met with a personal trainer for the first time ever last month and he really started with the basics and broke things down for me. First we eliminated exercises that I DON’T like. For example, running on the treadmill for an hour. While it’s a great warm up, it’s not the best way for me to get cardio in because I get bored easily. He simple said “so don’t run on the treadmill for an hour”. The first way to get yourself motivated to actually exercise is to do workouts that you like!! My go-to is typically yoga. But, when I’m really feeling ambitious I decide to hit the gym and do some circuit training. This is great for me because I can’t get bored. By doing multiple exercises for a short period of time, but repeating them in a circuit I can get my heart rate up, exercise many different parts of my body, and stay motivated and not bored!

Fitness Routine PIc

First, I start out with a nice light warm up to get my heart rate up and my muscles warm. I typically do 5-15 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical (NOT an hour!! phew…)

Fit rout shoes fit rout lunge Flex fit rout Fit routOnce I’m all warmed up, I begin my circuits. I switch these up each time I workout. It’s good to have a circuit that includes exercises which workout all parts of the body. I try to focus on three circuits of three exercises each. One circuit focusing on cardio, one on lower body, and one on upper body. Pictured are an example of each.

After my workout is complete I ALWAYS end with stretching. It is very important to stretch out once you are done to keep from getting an injury. This will also help people like me who are getting back in the swing of working out from feeling too sore the next couple of days.

It is important to get moving, no matter what way. If you love dancing, skating, jumping on a trampoline, anything at all DO IT! Find what you love and do it, because that is the best way to stay motivated to get fit. I am by no means a professional or a workout guru – just a novice girl trying to get fit. If you want to see a more in depth workout routine and how I do my circuits check out my YouTube channel HERE and my video below!

Be sure to head over to Erica’s blog to check out her workout routine!! Happy January, stay motivated, get moving, and continue working towards a fit and healthy lifestyle with us next Friday (:
